Future medics

Studying Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Sciences in the future is not just about achieving excellent academic qualifications.

Students wishing to pursue medical or veterinary sciences are given bespoke support during their time in Sixth Form to allow them to progress to their choice of degree.

This includes a programme of guest speakers, workshops and wider reading to stretch students beyond the curriculum.

All CHS Sixth Formers are given the opportunity to explore an Extended Project, with future medical and veterinary professionals strongly encouraged to choose a title linked to their future career.

Recent titles have included:

“Do language barriers impact experiences in medicine?” Emilia, 2025 (Leeds, Medicine)

“Are cardiovascular diseases fatal due to a lack of treatment?” Fajar, 2024 (UCLAN, Medicine)

“Which combinations of chemotherapy are available to endometrial cancer patients, and which is the most effective?” Anya, 2024 (Oxford, Medicine)

“How has the change in the understanding of neurological disorders affected their treatment?” Toby, 2022 (Edgehill, Medicine)

“What are the causes of dental fear and anxiety in children and to what extent does it affect their oral health?” Melissa, 2021 (Sheffield, Dental Surgery)

In April 2025, EPQ students presented their work to family and friends in a poster presentation evening, preparing them for future academic conferences.

Work experience and volunteering are crucial for future medical and veterinary professionals.

Our links with local health services, charities and more, supported by our on-site Careers Adviser Adele Fraser, enables our students to find the variety of long-term work experience required to enter these courses.

Volunteering opportunities both in our school community and with local charities allow our students to develop their communication and teamwork skills, as well as building confidence.

Regular seminars from medical and other scientific professionals, alongside our Aspire cohort activities, provide in-school academic enrichment for our prospective health students.

In the 2024-2025 academic year, guest speakers included Consultant Clinical Geneticist Professor Dian Donnai, Dr Gavin Merrifield, who challenged students to think about the role of AI in the future of humanity, and CHS alumnus Toby who shared his path from GCSEs to Medicine at Edgehill.

Our student-led Medical Society gives future medics, dentists and vets the opportunity to choose topics they are passionate about and present these to their peers.

In addition, Dr Pannell has an honorary guest fellowship with the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine at the University of Oxford, with the CEBM allowing MedSoc students to attend their conferences where Dr Pannell is a speaker.
